IUI may not be suitable when both fallopian tubes are blocked, when severe sperm abnormalities are present or when another condition makes IVF or ICSI more appropriate.

IUI Procedure
Step 1: Cycle Planning
The doctor decides whether IUI will be performed during a natural menstrual cycle or with medicines that support ovulation.
Step 2: Follicular Monitoring
Ultrasound scans may be used to monitor follicular growth and the uterine lining.
Step 3: Ovulation Timing
The procedure is scheduled close to ovulation. In selected cycles, medication may be used to help time the release of the egg.

Step 4: Semen Preparation
The semen sample is processed in the laboratory to concentrate healthy, moving sperm and remove unwanted components.
Step 5: Insemination
The prepared sperm is placed inside the uterus through a thin catheter. The procedure usually takes only a few minutes and generally does not require anesthesia.
Step 6: Pregnancy Test
A pregnancy test is generally planned on the date advised by the fertility team. Testing too early may give an inaccurate result.

Is IUI Painful?
Most patients experience little or no pain. Mild cramping or brief discomfort may occur while the catheter is passed through the cervix.
Risks of IUI

• Temporary cramping

• Mild spotting

• Infection, which is uncommon

• Multiple pregnancy when ovulation medicines produce several mature eggs

• Ovarian over-response to fertility medication
