Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction is a fertility treatment that uses medication to encourage the ovaries to develop and release an egg. It is generally recommended for women who do not ovulate regularly or who experience very infrequent or absent ovulation. Polycystic ovary syndrome and certain hormonal conditions are common reasons for ovulation difficulties.

Before beginning treatment, the doctor may assess the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovarian reserve and male partner's semen results.

Treatment Process
Initial Assessment
A detailed menstrual, medical and fertility history is taken. Ultrasound and hormone tests may be recommended.
Medication
Depending on the diagnosis, oral medicines or hormone injections may be prescribed.
Ultrasound Monitoring
Follicular growth is monitored through ultrasound scans. Monitoring helps determine:
- Whether the ovaries are responding
- The number of developing follicles
- Whether the dose needs adjustment
- The appropriate time for intercourse or IUI
- Whether the cycle should be cancelled because of excessive response
Timing Ovulation
Ovulation may happen naturally or may be timed with an injection when the follicle reaches an appropriate stage.
