Cryopreservation
Cryopreservation is the controlled freezing and storage of reproductive cells or embryos for possible future treatment.
Depending on the individual's medical and reproductive needs, cryopreservation may include:
- Egg freezing
- Embryo freezing
- Sperm freezing
Modern cryopreservation commonly uses rapid-freezing techniques to reduce damage from ice-crystal formation. However, not every frozen egg, sperm sample or embryo will survive thawing or result in pregnancy.
Egg Freezing
Egg freezing involves collecting and freezing unfertilised mature eggs for possible future use.
Egg-Freezing Process
- Fertility and ovarian-reserve assessment
- Ovarian-stimulation medication
- Ultrasound and hormonal monitoring
- Final maturation injection
- Egg retrieval
- Assessment of mature eggs
- Freezing and storage
When the eggs are used later, they are thawed and generally fertilised through ICSI before embryo development and transfer.
Egg freezing provides a future reproductive option but does not guarantee a baby.
Embryo Freezing
Embryo freezing may be considered when:
- Suitable embryos remain after an IVF or ICSI cycle
- A frozen embryo transfer is planned
- The uterine lining is not suitable for immediate transfer
- The doctor recommends postponing embryo transfer
- Another medical reason makes a later transfer preferable
Sperm Freezing
Sperm freezing may be considered when:
- The male partner may not be available on the treatment day
- Producing a fresh sample may be difficult
- A backup sample is recommended
- Sperm parameters vary
- Sperm has been surgically retrieved
- Future fertility treatment is being planned
Consent and Storage
Under Indian ART law, cryopreservation requires specific written instructions and consent from the parties involved. Storage, record keeping and future use must follow applicable legislation, regulations and clinic policy.
