Semen Analysis

Semen analysis is one of the primary tests used to evaluate male fertility.
The test examines the semen sample and provides information about sperm production and function.

Major Parameters include:
- Semen volume
- Sperm concentration
- Total sperm count
- Sperm movement or motility
- Sperm shape or morphology
- Sperm vitality
- Liquefaction and other semen characteristics
The World Health Organization laboratory manual provides standardised methods for examining and processing human semen and improving the consistency of laboratory results.

Why Is Semen Testing Recommended?

- During the initial fertility evaluation
- After prolonged difficulty conceiving
- When a male-fertility concern is suspected
- Before IUI, IVF or ICSI
- Following testicular surgery or infection
- When there is a sexual or ejaculatory concern
- After treatment for a male-fertility condition
- To assess the result of vasectomy when applicable

Preparing for a Semen Test
Patients should follow the clinic's instructions carefully. General preparation may include:
- Maintaining the advised period of abstinence
- Informing the doctor about medicines and supplements
- Reporting recent fever or illness
- Collecting the complete sample
- Using the sterile container provided
- Delivering the sample within the time advised
- Avoiding contamination of the sample

What Happens If the Result Is Abnormal?

One abnormal result does not always confirm permanent infertility. Semen parameters may vary because of:
- Recent fever or illness
- Incomplete sample collection
- Incorrect abstinence period
- Delay in laboratory processing
- Medicines or hormonal products
- Smoking or substance use
- Infection
- Varicocele
- Hormonal or genetic conditions
A repeat semen analysis or further male-fertility investigation may be recommended.
