Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination is a general term for fertility procedures in which prepared sperm is introduced into the female reproductive tract around the time of ovulation. Intrauterine insemination is the most commonly used form of artificial insemination. During IUI, processed sperm is placed directly inside the uterus.

Why Is Artificial Insemination Performed?

Mild sperm-count or movement concerns
Cervical mucus problems
Ovulation difficulties
Sexual or ejaculatory concerns
Unexplained infertility
Difficulty timing intercourse
Donor sperm treatment, where legally and medically appropriate

Artificial Insemination Process

Fertility Assessment
The doctor reviews the reproductive history of both partners and checks whether artificial insemination is appropriate.
Ovulation Monitoring
The cycle may be natural or supported with medication. Ultrasound scans may be used to identify the appropriate insemination time.
Sperm Preparation
The semen is processed to concentrate healthy, moving sperm.
Insemination
The prepared sperm is introduced using the medically selected method. In IUI, a thin catheter carries the sperm through the cervix and into the uterus.
Follow-Up
Patients are advised about normal activities, medication and the appropriate date for a pregnancy test.


Possible Risks

Temporary cramping
- Mild spotting
- Infection, which is uncommon
- Multiple pregnancy when fertility medication is used
- Ovarian over-response
- Failure to achieve pregnancy
