Dilation and Curettage - D&C

Dilation and curettage, or D&C, is a procedure in which the cervix is gently opened and tissue is removed from inside the uterus. Suction and/or a curette may be used depending on the indication. D&C is not a routine infertility treatment and is recommended only for specific medical reasons.

When May D&C Be Recommended?

- Retained pregnancy tissue after miscarriage
- Heavy or persistent uterine bleeding in selected situations
- Sampling the uterine lining when clinically indicated
- Removal of retained tissue after pregnancy-related events
- A procedure performed with hysteroscopy for selected uterine conditions

Procedure and Recovery

1. Clinical assessment and ultrasound or laboratory testing when needed
2. Discussion of alternatives, pain relief and anaesthesia
3. Gentle dilation of the cervix
4. Removal of tissue from the uterine cavity
5. Observation for bleeding and recovery from anaesthesia
6. Laboratory examination of tissue when appropriate
7. Follow-up and emergency-warning guidance

Possible Risks
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Uterine perforation
- Cervical injury
- Intrauterine adhesions, which are uncommon but may affect periods or fertility
- Incomplete removal requiring further care

When to Seek Urgent Care After the Procedure
- Heavy bleeding
- Severe or increasing abdominal pain
- Fever or chills
- Foul-smelling discharge
- Dizziness, fainting or significant weakness
