Oocyte Retrieval - Egg Collection

Oocyte retrieval, also called egg collection, is the procedure used to collect eggs from the ovaries during IVF, ICSI or egg-freezing treatment. It is carefully timed after ovarian stimulation and a final maturation injection.

Before Egg Collection

- Follicular monitoring with ultrasound
- Blood tests when required
- Final maturation injection at the instructed time
- Fasting and medicine instructions
- Anaesthesia assessment
- Confirmation of sperm collection or storage plan when relevant

How Is Egg Retrieval Performed?

1. Sedation or suitable anaesthesia is administered
2. An ultrasound probe is placed in the vagina
3. A fine needle is guided through the vaginal wall into each accessible follicle
4. Follicular fluid is collected and examined by the embryology team
5. The number of eggs identified is communicated after laboratory assessment
6. The patient is monitored during recovery before discharge

Possible Risks
- Pain or temporary bleeding
- Infection
- Injury to nearby structures, which is uncommon
- Anaesthesia-related complications
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome related to stimulation treatment
- Rare ovarian torsion or significant internal bleeding

After the Procedure

Mild pelvic discomfort, bloating or light spotting can occur. Patients should arrange transport home and follow instructions about medicines, activity, hydration and when to contact the clinic.
